Every year, December 1 marks World AIDS Day. Since 1988, it has been observed by all countries that are part of the United Nations to shine a spotlight on HIV/AIDS, which is still a pandemic and has been since 1981.

According to UNAIDS, the United Nations body that works to end HIV/AIDS worldwide, there were about 37.7 million people living with HIV worldwide in 2020, and 1.5 million new infections the same year. More than 680,000 people were estimated to have died of complications related to AIDS in 2020 alone.

Many countries around the world have committed to ending HIV/AIDS by 2030, but persistent inequity around health care and discrimination continue to cause infections to spread.

With that in mind, fundraising for HIV/AIDS research is as important as ever, and Canadian stars came together to help that cause last weekend in Toronto.

More than $1.1 million was raised at the Bloor Street Entertains event, organized by philanthropist Sylvia Mantella to benefit the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research (CANFAR).

A whopping 750 guests attended across 20 venues throughout Toronto's Yorkville neighbourhood, all pitching in to help CANFAR work to eradicate HIV/AIDS in our country by 2025.

"The first steps in eradicating HIV are education and stopping the stigma!" Sylvia Mantella wrote on Instagram about the event.

"Our goal is to get an HIV self-testing kit into the hands of every single Canadian who needs it."

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to be a major international health issue, many celebrities have found themselves directly affected by – or even diagnosed with – the illness.

Several prominent stars have received positive tests the pandemic began in March 2020 and spoken out about it.

The Delta variant continues to cause concern and drive infections worldwide, and some of the stars who have tested positive over the last few months have picked up the virus despite being fully vaccinated.

Experts say breakthrough infections don't mean the vaccines aren't doing their jobs – the vaccines are working in that they are preventing cases that result in severe illness, hospitalization or death.

"We can think of vaccination as a very good raincoat," CNN's Medical Analyst Dr. Leana Wen, an infectious disease specialist, recently told the network. "The raincoat will keep you dry in a drizzle. It might even work in a thunderstorm. But if you are in thunderstorms day after day, and sometimes going through hurricanes, at some point, you may get wet. The problem isn't that the raincoat isn't working – it's that there is too much weather all around you.

"That's what is happening now with COVID-19... the level of virus is so high that the vaccine alone may not be enough to protect you. That's why a mask can help, as can reducing the number of high-risk environments you're in. Ultimately, we need to reduce the level of virus around us – and the best way to do that is through all of us getting vaccinated."
Scroll through the gallery (or click through if you're on desktop) to see the stars who have had the illness and their recovery process.

Duchess Kate made a special visit to a London high school on Nov. 24 to join students learning about neuroscience.

The Duchess of Cambridge, long an advocate for supporting children in their early years to avoid or mitigate problems people experience later in life, traveled to Nower Hill High School in Harrow, London to take part in a SEEN (Secondary Education around Early Neurodevelopment) project through the University of Oxford.
