Lace, love letters and long walks on the beach are the domain of the classic bride, for whom romance reigns above all else. Steal your bridal inspiration from Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery.
The recently engaged actress is known for her elegant, feminine style both onscreen and off. “Gorgeous, glowing skin and a soft pink lip is the ultimate look for a classic bride,” says Lori Taylor Davis, global lead artist for Smashbox Cosmetics. “If you want timeless photos you’ll still love in 20 years, choose tones you wear all the time, but punched up.” Choose a long-lasting rosy formula that’s two shades darker than your natural lip colour for a flattering look that won’t transfer to your champagne flute.
“Brides always carry a powder compact to minimize shine, but by the end of the night, they have a ton of powder on their face,” says Lori. Apply a primer before makeup and touch up with a mattifier instead of a powder. Finish the look with waterproof mascara and eyeliner.
As for hair, classic brides can’t go wrong with a low bun or chignon. “Play with shape, volume and soft, face-framing layers for a flattering look,” says celebrity hair and makeup artist Cody Alain. He suggests using a texturizing product for long-lasting hold that still looks soft and romantic. For short hair, comb back strands and secure at the nape of your neck with a pin and firm-hold hairspray. “A gorgeous headband will also create shape and add a personal touch,” he says.
