Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas are officially husband and wife! Over more than three days of festivities, where both Christian and Hindu traditions were honoured, the couple wed in the actress’s home country of India. Following an enchanting Christian wedding a day prior, their beautiful Hindu ceremony took place at the jaw-droppingly gorgeous Umaid Bhawan royal palace on Sunday (Dec. 2) – and the couple's happiness is plain to see in HELLO! Canada’s exclusive first look at the dreamy celebration.
In the stunning wedding photo, Quantico’s leading lady can be seen dressed completely in red, as per tradition, and adorned with stacks of golden accessories. The 36-year-old wore a heavily embroidered two-piece lehenga, featuring a cropped top with scalloped short sleeves and a stunning full skirt. Priyanka wore a red veil (a dupatta), a 16-carat diamond and gold headpiece (a tikka), diamond earrings, a large nose ring and stacked bangles. Her piece de resistance was a Chopard necklace from the Haute Joaillerie Collection featuring 184.5 carats of pear-shaped diamonds set in 18k ethical white gold and stacked bangles – though the smile on her face was the best adornment for a day that will forever be marked in her memory.
"For the Indian wedding, I wore Sabyasachi," the gorgeous star told HELLO!. "I always knew I wanted a red traditional silhouette for my wedding but Sabya brought in incredible French embroidery to the mix and with incredible jewelry and western inspired veil it was just such an amalgamation of who I am!" The bride was taken to the altar by the women of the family, where she met her former fiancé. The two exchanged floral garlands, or jai malas, that they wore throughout the ceremony, then recited their beautiful vows to become united as husband and wife.
Nick opted for the dhoti, an article of clothing that consists of a rectangular, five-meter-long piece of cotton that’s typically white or cream in colour and adorned with golden embroidery. Faithful to the customs of his now-wife, the groom completed his wedding-day look with the typical Indian turban of the state of Rajasthan, recognizable by its peaked top. He also wore a beautiful kurta top. The celebrations took place in Jodhpur, the second-largest city in this region of northwest India, and the former member of the Jonas Brothers wanted to faithfully follow the traditions.
"I love that our wedding is a religious mash up," the bride told HELLO! exclusively. "We are taking beautiful traditions that we both grew up with and we are personalizing them in a way that makes sense for us." She continued: "It's been incredible to find the commonalities between our beliefs and figuring out how to blend them in a respectful and meaningful way." Her husband shares her excitement over bringing together their special traditions - and was dazzled by the details of the Hindu ceremony. "Just how thoughtful it is," he told HELLO! of what surprised him most. "Finding the meaning behind every detail really just made me fall in love with the culture even more."
The Hindu celebration follows a series of stunning religious ceremonies. First was the traditional Puja, a celebration in which the bride and groom bow to god, pray and sing while wearing traditional kurtas. Later came the Mehendi, a celebration that consists of painting henna on their hands, from which Priyanka shared stunning pictures on her Instagram. On Friday (Nov. 30), it was the Sangeet, an evening of song and dance during which the spouses took the opportunity to present themselves officially and meet each other in matrimony. The pre-wedding party was filled with performances by family and friends, the perfect opportunity for guests on both sides to strengthen their bonds with one another.
The couple's romance may have been a whirlwind, but that's also kind of a tradition in the two families - and one that doesn't worry them at all! "Both of our parents actually got married pretty quickly after meeting each other," Nick revealed. "Mine were three months and her parents 10 days. People always say 'you know when you know' - but really, 'you know when you know.'"
The newlyweds will have plenty more time to celebrate as they reportedly round out their wedding festivities this week. According to several local media outlets, it’s expected that there will be a reception in Delhi on Tuesday (Dec. 4), to which only their closest friends and relatives are invited. In addition, there will be another reception in Mumbai for Priyanka’s Bollywood friends.
