When it comes to Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s nuptials this past weekend, there was no shortage of romantic detail and cultural significance. Perfectly interweaving their Hindu and Christian religious customs in two gorgeous wedding ceremonies at the luxurious Umaid Bhawan Palace, it was clear that love was in the air – and hidden in the custom ensembles worn by bride and groom!
For the couple’s Christian ceremony on Saturday (Dec. 1), Quantico’s leading lady slipped into a breathtaking Ralph Lauren dress worthy of a standing ovation. Pairing a strapless column gown bedecked with 2,380,000 mother-of-people sequins with a hand-beaded and hand-embroidered overlay, the ethereal confection symbolized a lot more than a fashion win for the American designer. Priyanka had special phrases embroidered in her gown: Nicholas Jerry Jonas, December 1, 2018, Madhu & Ashok, Om Namah Shivay (a Hindu mantra dedicated to the God Shiva), Family, Hope, Compassion and Love. For her ‘something old,’ the Bollywood beauty had a piece of her mother-in-law’s lace wedding dress sewn into her own.
The former member of the Jonas Brothers looked positively dapper, too, suiting up in a double-breasted Ralph Lauren Purple Label tuxedo for arguably the biggest day of his life. And while the James Bond-worthy design looked completely classic, Nick also gave his ensemble a personal touch. The 26-year-old had a piece of fabric from Priyanka’s gown stitched inside his lapel with the Urdu words “My Jaan,” meaning “My Life.”
Aside from the obvious declarations of love in each and every detail, even the choice of designer meant something special to the couple. The first time Priyanka and Nick were pictured together was at the 2017 Met Gala while representing Ralph Lauren. And though their feelings for one another were a secret at that time, the designer unknowingly played a helping hand in their blossoming romance.
“When Ralph Lauren approached us (they’re so much a part of our love story for obvious reasons) and I learned that Ralph has only designed three wedding dresses in 50 years – one for his daughter, his daughter in law and his niece – I was blown,” she gushed to HELLO! exclusively. The 36-year-old continued: “Then when we went for the sketch presentation, they created exactly what I envisioned for myself on my wedding day… and I said ‘yes’ to the dress.”
From Hindu customs like the Mehendi celebration and musical Sangeet evening to their spectacular Christian ceremony, the week was filled with elements taken from both Priyanka and Nick’s backgrounds, resulting in a meaningful union of the two cultures. “I love that our wedding is a religious mash up. We are taking beautiful traditions that we both grew up with and we are personalizing them in a way that makes sense for us,” she told HELLO!. “It’s been incredible to find the commonalities between our beliefs and figuring out how to blend them in a respectful and meaningful way.”
