Lady Gaga reveals how fiancé Taylor Kinney first proposed with a 'candy' ring

Lady Gaga had, quite literally, the sweetest proposal ever. The newly engaged star was presented with a heart-shaped diamond ring from her actor fiancé Taylor Kinney – but before this, she was given a joke "candy" ring made of sweets.

Opening up about her Valentine's Day proposal, Gaga said: "First he gave me a Ring Pop. That was kind of amazing and I was crying, I was so excited."

"I said, 'Yes!' right away," she told Access Hollywood, speaking on the red carpet at the Oscars. "And then he pulled out the heart-shape diamond. First it was candy. I was happy with the candy."

Newly engaged Lady Gaga said she hid her ring at the Oscars as her red gloves were part of her original look

The singer went on to describe how her new engagement had changed her perspective.

"It makes everything better," said Gaga. "When you're in love and have love it makes everything better. From the moment I met him, my heart was with him."

The shape of her diamond ring is particularly fitting then. Announcing her news with a photo on Instagram, the Born This Way singer gave fans a close-up look of her mammoth ten-carat rock, which is valued at no less than £500,000.

Lady Gaga's engagement ring featured her and Taylor's initials on the band

"He gave me his heart on Valentine's Day, and I said YES!" Gaga told her 5.8 million followers.

The singer, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, went on to share another snap a few days later, revealing the "favourite part" of her engagement ring – the letters "T" and "S" separated by a heart symbol embedded on the band, to represent "Taylor loves Stefani".

She wrote of her Lorraine Schwartz sparkler: "My favourite part of my engagement ring, Taylor and Lorraine designed 'T [hearts] S' in white diamonds on the band. He always called me by my birth name. Since our very first date. I'm such a happy bride-to-be! I can't stop smiling!"

Lady Gaga later flaunted her ten-carat rock at an Oscars afterparty

Gaga chose not to reveal her engagement ring on the red carpet, covering them up with red gloves designed by Azzedine Alaïa, the man behind her show-stopping gown. "Mr. Alaïa designed the gloves before we got engaged and I wanted to keep the look exactly as he envisioned it," she explained.

Gaga later unveiled her ring at an Oscars afterparty, turning heads in a black sheer dress that featured a flowing train.

The singer was also a talking point during the ceremony, as she gave a powerful tribute performance to The Sound of Music. She told Extra: "You know we haven't even begun to talk about the wedding. I've been so focussed on the Oscars and this performance, I really put my heart into this tribute performance."
