'Fast and the Furious' actor Paul Walker has died at 40

He made his name as the star of the Fast and Furious franchise, but no one would have ever thought that it was a car that would tragically take Paul Walker's life at age 40.

The actor's official social media feeds confirmed the news, with this message posted on Facebook at approximately 10 pm on Nov. 30:

"It is with a truly heavy heart that we must confirm that Paul Walker passed away today in a tragic car accident while attending a charity event for his organization Reach Out Worldwide. He was a passenger in a friend's car, in which both lost their lives. We appreciate your patience as we too are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news. Thank you for keeping his family and friends in your prayers during this very difficult time. We will do our best to keep you apprised on where to send condolences. - #TeamPW"

Fast and Furious 6 was released this year and is reported to have been one of the highest grossing films of 2013. Paul was in the process of filming the newest instalment of the series, Fast and Furious 7, which is slated for release next year.

From his early roles in 90s teen films like She's All That and Varsity Blues to his longstanding role as Brian O'Conner in the Fast and Furious films, Paul has been a mainstay in Hollywood for decades and will be dearly missed.

His final film, Hours, is scheduled for release on December 13 and focusses on a father dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Paul's family and friends.
