Astronaut Chris Hadfield lands Cannon Doll role in 'The Nutcracker'

Retired Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield is, once again, preparing for blastoff with a newly landed role in The Nutcracker.

Chris will dress up as a Russian Petrouchka doll in a Dec. 24 production of the ballet in Toronto, firing off a cannon into the audience as part of the performance.

Each year, the ballet chooses a handful of celebrity and media personalities to play the part, whose cannon blast marks the beginning of the first act's battle scene.

It's the first time in the ballet's 63-year history that an astronaut has claimed the role.

Previous Petrouchka doll players include former mayor David Miller, four members of the Toronto Argonauts football team and Toronto mayor Rob Ford in 2011, who gave a rather lively performance.

Other stars slated to play the Cannon Doll this year include Brendan Canning of Broken Social Scene, CBC Radio host Steve Patterson and Royal Canadian Air Farce comedian Craig Lauzon.
