After settling on a wedding date in September, George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin have also reportedly found the perfect venue for their upcoming nuptials – Highclere Castle in Hampshire, England, which is the home of Downton Abbey.
Amal, 36, reportedly fell in love with the historic residence when 53-year-old George, whisked her away for a surprise mini holiday there last week, knowing that she is a big fan of the show.
"George became close friends with Hugh Bonneville, who plays Lord Robert Crawley, when they did Monuments Men together last year," a source told the Mail. "And they really hit it off. He contacted Hugh and asked him to arrange a private tour of the castle. Amal was blown away.
"When he saw his bride-to-be's reaction to the spectacular Victorian castle, set on 1,000 acres of parkland, he began making discreet inquiries about having their wedding performed there. And he was told they would be most happy to accommodate them."
Highclere Castle has been home to the Carnarvon family since 1679, and is currently owned by the 8th Lord and Lady Carnarvon.
The castle is available for weddings; the Saloon is licensed for civil ceremonies, and brides can prepare for their wedding in one of the bedrooms before walking down the sweeping Oak staircase in front of their guests.
Its location also makes it an ideal venue for George and London-based Amal. Highclere is within easy reach of the British capital, and lies just 50 miles from Heathrow, making it easy for the bride and groom's family and friends from overseas to attend.
