Inside their split: What went wrong for Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas

When Melanie Griffith stepped out this week to the gym still wearing her wedding ring, the message was clear: even though she and husband Antonio Banderas have parted ways after 18 years of marriage – Melanie filed for divorce on June 6 citing irreconcilable differences – they will remain united moving forward.

That’s the way they’ve tackled all their ups and downs during their two decades together. “We work together to make our family a success,” Melanie told Hello! in 2010 during a world exclusive interview at their home in Spain.

Added Antonio, “There were people who literally didn’t give us more than six months. But we love each other. We’ve figured out how to get past obstacles – and some of them have been really tough ones. If you get past those you only get stronger.”

So what went wrong that they couldn’t make it past this latest obstacle? Insiders say Melanie, 56, and Antonio, 53, had fallen out of love in recent years and were leading largely separate lives. Another source has suggested they only stayed together for the sake of their daughter, Stella, 17.

Melanie has filed for sole physical custody of Stella and is requesting spousal support, but there’s no question Antonio will remain a hands-on father. They’re sure to cross paths in Hollywood. Antonio next stars in The Expendables 3, while his former love has five films hitting screens in the next two years.

It’s focusing on positive projects like these that keep Melanie going. “I think we all make ourselves miserable about stuff we don’t need to be miserable about,” she has said. “You get to a point where you realize it’s a waste of time worrying.”
