Diary of the Week: Power Ball, Scrubs in the City and Thrill of Ascot

By Amoryn Engel

What's old was new again at this year's Power Ball, held lakeside at The Harbourfront Centre. Edgy as ever, patrons descended on this art party celebrating a revolutionary moment in time. Power Ball: Old / New World put the spotlight on analogue and digital technology, offering up progressive art performances and installations that transported partygoers. Hipsters and influencers galore came together to lend a hand in support of programming at The Power Plant gallery.

The Brickworks lent the most incredible backdrop for the much anticipated Scrubs in the City fete in support of SickKids Hospital. This year's theme, Soirée Under the Stars, was an evening of over-the-top fashion, food and entertainment. Glamorous guests arrived in bright white ensembles and struck a pose in the ever-popular photo booth. More than $450,000 was raised in support of the SickKids Operating Suites Redevelopment Project.

Best Buddies Canada, an organization that helps to provide meaningful friendships for people with intellectual disabilities, celebrated its annual “Thrill of Ascot” event on a perfectly hot summer’s day at Woodbine Racetrack. Stunning ladies arrived in an over-the-top collection of fabulous fascinators. It was pure eye candy! Ascot hospitality (Toronto style) was offered throughout the afternoon as approximately 250 guests enjoyed a champagne reception, gourmet buffet, live entertainment and a live auction. A fascinating day, indeed!
