NHL hockey fans can be notoriously tough on an opposing team, especially when it comes to their high-profile players. Some critics, however, take things too far by turning on players’ wives and girlfriends and posting anonymous, harmful comments on social media.
The woefully common practice is one that Elisha Cuthbert knows all too well.
Canadian couple: Elisha and Dion were wed in 2013.
The Hollywood actress, who married Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf in 2013, is no stranger to receiving unwarranted harassment from beleaguered fans on Twitter. (In 2009, the catty comments came to a head after former boyfriend and NHL star Sean Avery made rude remarks about his ex when she began dating other hockey players.)
Following the Leafs' loss to the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night (Jan. 7), Mrs. Phaneuf was once again on the receiving end of cruel comments directed towards her husband, which were posted on her most recent Instagram photo, a gorgeous black-and-white selfie. While the majority of the remarks were admiring ("You’re beauitful!" "Do you do your own makeup?"), one particularly irate user wrote that Dion was wasting his time in Toronto.
Fans were quick to support Elisha, lashing out at the nasty commenter and commending the actress for rising above it.
“People know you don’t play hockey, right?” wrote one fan. “How many hate comments do you get about the leafs? It’s ridiculous, good job ignoring it.”
The next day, the blond beauty responded to the controversial exchange with a funny snap that bore a remarkable likeness to the mean-spirited commenter, implying that her critic is a lot less easy on the eyes than she is.
Aside from supporting her beau on the ice, Elisha has been keeping a low profile over the Christmas holidays. The 32-year-old stunner will return to the spotlight when her new NBC comedy, One Big Happy, premieres on March 17.
Produced by Ellen Degeneres, the kooky show follows a lesbian named Lizzy (Elisha) who gets pregnant by her straight male best friend, Luke (played by Nick Zano), just as he meets and marries the love of his life, Prudence (Kelly Brook).
