Ladies, March 8 is your day – International Women’s Day. The annual event marks the many strides females have made toward economic, political and social equality over the past century.
This year’s theme, as set forward by the United Nations, is “Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity: Picture It!” and calls on people from around the world to realize women’s rights (including freedom of expression and religion). The accompanying hashtag is #makeithappen.
Actress Gwyneth Paltrow's words about honesty have helped empower us: "It's a waste of time for people to say things they think other people want to hear, or try and come off in a certain way. I try to be as honest as I can." And fellow Oscar winner Anne Hathaway has shared powerful messages about gender equality, like this one: “I believe I've always been a big believer in equality. No one has ever been able to tell me I couldn't do something because I was a girl.”
Powerhouse music figures Beyoncé like Christina Aguilera have stressed the importance of feeling comfortable in your own skin, with Christina urging that “the female body is something that's so beautiful. I wish women would be proud of their bodies and not diss other women for being proud of theirs."
