Diary of the Week: Nordstrom's grand opening and the Face of Today Gala

By: Jenn Campbell and Nicole Harvie

Ottawa’s style mafia was out in full force this week as Nordstrom threw a boisterous opening-night party. Store aisles were packed with party-goers dressed to the nines and taking it all in, from fashionable models acting as mannequins to a live band on one floor and DJs spinning on the next. The sites and sounds were fuelled by fabulous food and drink sourced coast to coast - from Nova Scotia lobster rolls and Alberta beef poutine to small cans of Blancs de Blancs champagne and chocolate truffles. A who’s who of Ottawans paid $100 a ticket for the event, with $180,000 in proceeds benefitting the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation and the United Way. A pair of fourth-generation Nordstrom brothers and one of their cousins celebrated the famous retailer's second store in Canada. (The first opened in Calgary last year.)

It was a feast for the eyes as a stunning set of Vancouver’s young entrepreneurs and aspiring CEOs, sparkling in their circus-couture best, gathered for the 6 th Annual Face of Today Gala. Presenting sponsor, the ever-posh Rosewood Hotel Georgia (home to famed restaurant Hawksworth and the newly opened vaulted cocktail barProhibition) was dressed up to perfection for the evening’s theme, Cirque Fantastique! Foundation founder Kasondra Cohen-Herrendorf and her committee of change-makers (all under 40) - including JJ Wilson, son to Lululemon Athletica founder Chip Wilson - put together an evening that was not only luxurious but entertaining! Unbelievable contortionist and cirque pole acrobat acts had jaws dropping as more than 200 guests, seated on suitably circus-chic striped chairs, dined on the beautifully wine-paired dinner. Gala-goers tossed their hats in the ring for some amazing auction items, like getaways to world-renowned ski resort Whistler in a Bentley, swoon-worthy status bags and primp-and-pamper packages fit for a celebrity. After dinner a troupe of after-party revellers joined to indulge in a lavish dessert bar, try their hand at blackjack and hit the dance floor, only after the chair-stacker wrapped a nail-biting performance! Over $200,000 was raised to help young, underprivileged leaders achieve success through local and international programs.
