Actor Ansel Elgort will be able to toast the expected success of next week’s Insurgent debut with a glass of champagne – today he is officially 21! In the follow up to last year’s mega-hit Divergent, Ansel reprises his role as Caleb – brother to the film’s heroine, played by Shailene Woodley.
It’s a welcome reunion for the two talented actors, who had audiences swooning, crying and then swooning again thanks to their performances in 2014’s heartbreaking romance flick The Fault in Our Stars. “Every single day he looks at the world with a new set of eyes,” Shailene has said about her handsome costar. “He is literally the most creative person I’ve ever met.”
The Manhattan-native grew up in a creative household. His father is Vogue fashion photographer Arthur Elgort, his mother Greta is an opera director and his older siblings are also entrenched in the arts. He credits musicals like Les Misérables and Oklahoma for first piquing his interest in acting, and then, as he tells Interview Magazine, “I got into movies, watching old films my dad had, the old Elia Kazan movies, like On the Waterfront. It was those old movies, actually, that really got me started. Marlon Brando, Paul Newman—straight-up legends.”
With the final two films in the Divergent series keeping him busy well into 2017, Ansel Elgort has officially found his place in Hollywood. To mark his milestone birthday, Hello! reveals 10 things you need to know about this star on the rise.
