Royal Baby: Stars react to the birth of the Princess of Cambridge

Politicians, celebrities and royal fans couldn’t be more thrilled over the news that the Duchess of Cambridge, née Kate Middleton, has given birth to a daughter. On Saturday, May 2, Prince William and Kate welcomed a baby sister for Prince George and supporters were quick to take to social media to wish them well.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was on surprise visit to Iraq at the time of the birth, but issued a statement, saying, “all Canadians were delighted today to learn of the birth of Her Royal Highness The Princess of Cambridge."

He continued by adding that the Royal Family "holds a very special place in our country" and offered "heartfelt congratulations and very best wishes to the happy family."

Governor General David Johnston also asserted that the princess "will find an outpouring of affection from all Canadians and from people across the Commonwealth."

Ontario politician John Tory sent his best wishes, writing “I'd like to congratulate the Duke & Dutchess of Cambridge on the birth of their daughter. Great news! #RoyalBaby @KensingtonRoyal #TOpoli."

Canadian stars, too, have been joining in on the celebratory notes, with television personality Jessi Cruickshank quipping, “North West is so jealous of that royal baby.”

David Beckham, who turns 40 today, sent his congrats via Facebook. “Incredible news. I couldn't be happier for William and Kate. Happy to hear that mother and daughter are fine. It's not a bad day to be born,” wrote the former soccer star.

Princess Diana’s brother, Charles (Earl Spencer), sent his congratulations to the couple on Twitter, writing, "Very lovely news from the Lindo Wing - so happy for all 4 of them."

The big news came by way of a statement released by Kensington Palace after 11 am.

"Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a daughter at 8.34am," Kensington Palace announced on Twitter. "The baby weighs 8lbs 3oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth.

"The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales & The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry & members of both families have been informed. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well."

Canadians can write their best wishes to William and Kate on the Governor General's website.
