More than 30 years ago, a fresh-faced 16-year-old from St. Catharines, Ont., set off on a journey to become one of the world’s most successful and respected supermodels – and she's still got it! Looking as glamorous as ever, Linda Evangelista is still at the top of her game as she celebrates her 50th birthday on May 10.
Linda was part of an exclusive pack of supermodels who ruled the fashion industry in the 1990s. Along with Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington,Linda on the cover of every fashion magazine, walked in every runway show and modelled for every top designer in the world - not to mention starring in the iconic music video for George Michael's "Freedom." Even if it was in jest, Linda made a valid point when she famously quipped, “We [supermodels] don't wake up for less than $10,000 a day.”
The former FLARE magazine cover girl (below in July, 1985) became known as the industry's most versatile chameleon, changing her hair colour 17 times over the course of five years and lobbing it off in 1988 to launch an unforgettable pixie trend. Even with her massive success, Linda is quick to credit her family, friends and colleagues for helping her achieve her dreams, telling Interview, “I'm not self-made. I can't take full credit for where I am today. There have been so many people behind me—supporting me, pushing me, advising me, guiding me. I didn't get here on my own.”
Away from the camera, Linda is enjoying a happy life as mom to eight-year-old son Augustin James. “Motherhood is my whole life now, ” she told Harper’s Bazaar in 2013. “It’s the best. I am so fulfilled.” To celebrate the supermodel’s big day, Hello! looks back at ten of Linda’s most memorable milestone moments.
