10 times Carey Mulligan owned the red carpet

Every time Carey Mulligan steps onto the red carpet, all eyes are on the British beauty. The Far from the Madding Crowd actress, who celebrates her milestone 30th birthday on May 28, has secured her spot among the fashion elite making elegant and sophisticated choices that never fade into the background thanks to modern elements (think: fringe, sequin and playful prints.) From Prada to Dior, Carey seems to have all the major fashion houses on speed dial.

Carey turned heads in jewel-encrusted Chanel at the 2010 CFDA/Vogue Awards.

She’s also received the sartorial stamp of approval from Vogue magazine. This month’s issue of the fashion authority marks the third time editor extraordinaire Anna Wintour has chosen Carey as her cover girl. "She has enormous style,” Anna has said of the budding icon, before praising her even greater talents as an actress.

Born in Westminster, Carey first wowed audiences with her performance in the play Forty Winks before making her feature-film debut as Kitty Bennet in 2005’s Pride & Prejudicealongside Keira Knightley and Rosamund Pike. She then turned to the small screen, starring in Bleak House, Doctor Who and The Amazing Mrs. Pritchard. In 2010, the Academy took notice of the actress, rewarding Carey with her first Oscar nomination for her portrayal of a sharp and witty teenager in Nick Hornby’s An Education. A few years later, Carey helped ignite a 1920s fashion revival when she played Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann's visually stunning adaptation of The Great Gatsby.

In April 2012, the gamine beauty stayed true to her sense of style by wearing a custom Prada gown (complete with wellies!) when she quietly married Marcus Mumford, the lead singer of the folk band Mumford & Sons, during a beautiful ceremony in the Somerset countryside. Carey and Marcus’s song-worthy love story started when they were childhood pen pals. They lost touch over the years but after reconnecting as adults in 2011, they found their happily ever after. The Drive star keeps her married life as private as possible, telling Vogue that, “Marcus is the only thing that’s mine that I can keep totally away, so I try to.”

Taking a break from the big screen, Carey is currently starring in the emotionally charged drama Skylight on Broadway. The role, which garnered her a Tony award nomination, sees Carey step into the shoes of a passionate schoolteacher wrapped up in a painful love triangle with an older man, played by Bill Nighy. Her run on the Great White Way comes to an end on June 21st, giving Carey the freedom to support her husband as he sings his way through a summer of music festivals.
