Before she celebrated her first birthday, actress Brooke Shields had already made her small-screen debut, starring in a television commercial for Ivory soap. Now, as she celebrates her milestone 50th birthday on May 31, the former child actress has a lifetime of memorable performances under her belt.
The Manhattan-born beauty dabbled in modeling and small roles, including playing Christopher Plummer’s daughter in 1974’s After the Fall, before landing the life-changing part of an underage prostitute in the 1978 drama Pretty Baby. It propelled Brooke to stardom thanks to the controversial nature of the film. She followed it up with roles in Endless Love, Wanda Nevada with Peter Fonda and - a coming of age story that is undeniably her most famous film - The Blue Lagoon.
At 15, Brooke took a job that was perhaps her most scandalous ever: modeling in a series of sultry Calvin Klein ads in 1980. In the most notable spot, she asks the viewer, "Do you want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing. "I was very naive," she said years later, reflecting on the sensual campaign. "I wasn't reading into the dialogue the way other people read into the dialogue."
Three years later, 18-year-old Brooke took a break from showbiz to study French Literature at Princeton, telling the Daily Mail in 2010 that, “it was this whole new territory: to think for myself, to realize I actually did have an opinion. Education is the one thing that can’t be challenged or taken away from you.”
Along the way she found love with tennis ace Andre Agassi in the 1990s, but the power couple parted ways in 1999. She is now happily married to TV producer Chris Henchy, with whom she has two daughters, Grier, 13, and nine-year-old Rowan. Her own relationship with her mother (and former manager) Teri, who passed away in 2012, was far from perfect. Brooke documented and defended their tumultuous relationship, which included verbal abuse, in the 2014 memoir There Was a Little Girl. “I was her greatest creation,” Brooke said at the time. “It was us against the world.” Further telling the New York Post, “I had it bad, but who I am today is an amalgam of every single part of my past.”
