Avril Lavigne launches charitable campaign for Lyme Disease

Avril Lavigne celebrated more than just her 31st birthday on Sept. 27 as she kicked off a special campaign close to her heart. Through the Avril Lavigne Foundation, the Canadian singer will be raising money to benefit children and young people suffering from Lyme Disease. One lucky supporter will also get a very special prize – the chance to spend time with Avril and have a speaking role in the star’s upcoming animated movie, Charming.

“I’m excited that this year’s campaign is supporting people with Lyme disease and helping others to better understand the issue,” said Avril in a statement. “My fans are always so supportive and ready to give back; I look forward to coming together for an issue that’s so close to me.” For the next five weeks, fans can donate to the cause via the singer’s Prizeo page and be entered into a draw for a variety of prizes, including exclusive signed memorabilia.

Avril, who revealed her Lyme Disease diagnosis in April, gave fans an update on her health earlier this month. "This journey continues," she captioned an Instagram picture. "Just reach up, don't give up until you've touch the sky…. We were all meant to fly.”

The Napanee native has been keeping a low profile since announcing her separation from husband Chad Kroeger on Sept. 2, but she couldn’t help but share pictures from her birthday celebrations with her nearly 2-million followers on Instagram. “Grateful for the people in my life who care … nurture and love. chill birthday hang,” wrote the star. The festivities were a family affair, with Avril’s sister Michelle joining her big sis for some fun in the photo booth. “Birthday kiss from my sis,” read the caption.
