He's one of Hollywood's most coveted leading men – starring in five films in 2015 alone – and yet Macbeth star Michael Fassbender still manages to keep a surprisingly low profile. The 38-year-old's illusive personal life can be attributed to his busy filming schedule. "I’m kind of selfish with the hours that I put into the work," he famously told GQ for a 2013 cover story. And not much has changed for the Irish-German actor, who enjoyed a meteoric rise to celebrity with the 2008 film Hunger, directed by Steve McQueen. He's since collaborated with the British filmmaker two more times, in 2011's Shame (where he famously went fully nude for a scene)and the high-profile 12 Years a Slave in 2012.
As the star of director Justin Kurzel's film adaptation of Macbeth (in theatres Dec. 4), Michael shows off his Shakespearean side – one that the actor didn't even know he had. “I’m not the type to say, ‘I always wanted to play the Dane,’" he told The Telegraph. Growing up in Killarney, Ireland, to which his family moved from his native Heidelberg, Germany (Michael's dad is German and mom is Irish) when he was two years old, Michael studied the Bard in secondary school but never imagined himself cast in the lead role. He's since had a change of heart, saying, "I think every actor should do it once. And the opportunity to have a go is a great privilege."
In honour of the multi-talented and extremely hard-working thespian's latest project, we rounded up the top 10 facts to help know Michael Fassbender a little better.
