Rachel McAdams shares her joy over Oscar nomination with Hello! Canada

"This is such an incredible honour. I am shocked and delighted," reads a statement from Rachel McAdams, who is celebrating her very first Academy Award nomination. Come Oscars night, the Canadian star will battle it out for best supporting actress for her spell-bounding performance as real-life journalist Sacha Pfeiffer in Spotlight. "Thank you to Tom, the cast, the entire Spotlight team, especially Sacha Pfeiffer and the Academy. What a tremendous recognition, not just for me but for this important film. Never been so happy to get a call at 6 a.m.!”

Also in Rachel's category are Rooney Mara, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Alicia Vikander and Kate Winslet. The 88th Annual Academy Awards will be presented live on Feb. 28.

We caught up with the star at the film's star-studded première at last year's Toronto International Film Festival, where a Valentino-clad Rachel spoke candidly with Hello! about the role and what surprised her the most about bringing Sacha's story to life.

"Something I discovered along the way is how honourable Sacha was in terms of dealing with the survivors of the abuse. She’s asking people to turn their worlds upside down and they are trying to heal and put this behind them and she’s literally knocking on their doors and cold calling them and asking them to talk about this abuse," she said.

"I respect her so much because she didn’t just walk out of their lives as soon as she had the story. She’s still friends with many of them and formed these really strong relationships. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that she did it all with such integrity and grace."
