Grieving Celine Dion faces new tragedy with brother Daniel's terminal cancer

After an emotional year nursing her ailing husband, Celine Dion was forced to say goodbye to the love of her life, René Angélil, when he died at their Las Vegas home on Thursday (Jan. 14.). And then only days after René's death, the singer has faced another devastating loss: her older brother Daniel also died because of cancer.

A statement from Celine's representatives confirmed the sad news on Saturday (Jan. 16). Prior to Daniel's passing, the singer's sister Claudette opened up about their brother's condition with The Journal of Montreal, saying, "It’s very painful. It looks a lot like René, he had cancer of the throat, tongue and brain, " adding, "Our family is very experienced." His funeral will be held on Jan. 23, a day after the family gathers for René's funeral at Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal.

It has been a very difficult week for Celine Dion.

"He is 59 years old, very young to be the end of his life," Claudette said of Daniel, who is one of 14 children in the Dion family. Despite the pain she is feeling for her brother,

Claudette, 67, also addressed her sadness at the passing of her brother-in-law René. He was "outstanding," she said. "We have received a lot of support and comfort after the announcement of his death. It shows how great he was and that he touched so many before. It is heart-warming to see how much he was loved."

The Canadian singer's husband died on Thursday.

The family has asked for privacy at this time, and for those wishing to send flowers, a donation to the Maison Adhémar-Dion palliative care centre in Québec would be appreciated.
