Diary of the Week: SaksTOpia and the TFCA Awards

As Toronto excitedly awaits the spring arrival of Saks Fifth Avenue, a select group of notables gathered at the west end's trendy NSC Gallery to toast the new #SaksTOpia campaign with a cocktail party and dinner. The urban space came alive with the video's stars, local influencers who excitedly share the best of the city in a series of stylish videos (think blogger babes Sam and Cailli Beckerman, design giants George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg, and Buca chef Rob Gentile). Wine pairings made for a festive mood at the dinner table, where a pumpkin cheesecake was the seasonally savvy kiss goodnight. Now if only we could work it off with a stroll through Saks... All in due time!

Since its 1997 debut, the Toronto Film Critics Association has brought together the city's most discerning cinephiles, who recently doled out this year's TFCA Awards at a glitzy gala held in Toronto at the Carlu. The champagne was flowing as Canadian actors such as Tara Spencer-Nairn, Sarah Gadon and Don McKellar toasted the night's big winners, Guy Maddin and Evan Johnson, whose The Forbidden Room took home the $100,000 Rogers Best Canadian Film Award, a prize unmatched in Canada and a sum so grand that Guy joked it would fuel another 10 film projects. Ex Machina star and Hollywood "It" girl Alicia Vikander, Carol director Todd Haynes and filmmaker Deepa Mehta were also among the evening's honourees.
