From his character to his costar to his own daily life, Luke Kirby manages to see the wonder in everything. The Canadian-born actor, who still loves returning home to Guelph and travelling out east for some Newfoundland Fish 'n' Brewis, stars alongside Katie Holmes in Touched with Fire (opening Feb. 12) – which follows the journey of two bipolar patients who struggle with the realities of their disease and their blossoming romance.
"[Katie] is really playful. And she has a great deal of wonder and that really helped serve the role and the relationship with Carla [Katie's character in the film]," Luke exclusively tells Hello! Canada. "She has such an enthusiasm for things big and small and in those moments when she and I were playing that mania it was like [being] kids in a sandbox. It was like a friend, just out to play."
Playing in this film – and particularly playing his character Marco – appealed greatly to Luke. "I was impressed with Marco’s defiance – the spirit of stubbornness really had an appeal for me," Luke reveals. "He does carry a great deal of wonder at being alive. Just seeing somebody keep hammering away at what they think is right – that really struck a cord."
Even though Luke is a very different person from the character he plays, he was struck by one shared similarity. "I think I can get a little lost in wonder," the actor says after a moment of self-reflection. "I can sort of look out and be impressed with nature, the architecture of geology, the architecture of human kind. I can just get overly excited and I can be a glop of wonder on the floor."
Relating these personal perspectives back to his character, Luke adds: "I think Marco is a bit inspired and there are times where I’ve probably been very inspired and haven’t used that time productively. I’m very happy with watching the clouds change shape."
