All eyes were on Sophie Grégoire Trudeau as she swept into the White House's East Room in a brightly hued gown for a state dinner hosted by Canada's neighbours to the south, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle, also clad in a show-stopping gown. With her loving husband Prime Minister Justin Trudeau by her side, Sophie prepared to dazzle a room full of curious guests with her style and her charming personality.
Sophie stayed true to Canadian designer Lucian Matis on her first full day in Washington, first wearing one of his dresses to visit the White House earlier in the day and then slipping into a purple cap-sleeved gown with pink detailing on the bodice for the state dinner. She wore her hair in cascading waves and carried another brightly hued Ela clutch, this time purple to match her gown.
FLOTUS Michelle looked radiant in a deep-blue strapless ball gown by New York-based Canadian designer Jason Wu, smattered with a pink-and-yellow floral print and featuring asymmetrical draping. Full hair in soft waves with side-swept bangs completed the First Lady's look.
The state dinner was a star-studded affair, with Canadian attendees including actor Ryan Reynolds, who was accompanied by his stunning wife Blake Lively, SNL founder Lorne Michaels, Michael J. Fox, Mike Meyers and Sandra Oh. Singer Sara Bareilles was among the performers at the black-tie affair, wearing a black long-sleeved top and red mullet-style skirt.
After their arrival in Washington on Mar. 9, the Obamas gave the Trudeaus a warm welcome and spent time with their children - Xavier, 8, Ella-Grace, 7, and two-year-old Hadrien. Sophie arrived at the White House in a red and pink floral dress by Lucian Matis, pink pumps by Zvelle (which donates 10% of proceeds to Women's College hospital in Toronto) and an orange Aldo clutch.
“Sophie is young and vibrant and that should be reflected in what she wears," close friend and style collaborator Jessica Mulroney told Hello! on helping Sophie to prepare for the trip. "What better way to make a splash at the White House? In Canadian designs, no less!”
Sophie's been on a stylish parade since Justin took office in Nov. 2015. While on tour in Europe, the former TV personality dazzled in a white Zac Posen gown posing alongside the Queen. And last week her affinity for Canadian designers saw the brunette beauty slip into a metallic gold Greta Constantine across-the-shoulder number at a conference in Toronto.
Sophie's casual style has also been winning rave reviews, from her collection of sumptuous Sentaler coats in neutrals like camel and cream to her ability to pull off any type of hat and the punches of colour she adds to her looks courtesy of candy-coloured Ela clutches.
