Matthew McConaughey has encouraged Hollywood to ‘embrace’ Donald Trump as president. The actor recently sat down with ChannelFi to talk about his new film Gold, but unsurprisingly the conversation soon talked to the new US leader, with the interviewer noting that "every single American actor or arty type who come to London dumps on Trump". Asked if it's time for Hollywood to "give the guy a break", Matthew, 47, replied: "Well, they don't have much of a choice."
He continued: "He's our president. And it's very dynamic and as divisive of an inauguration and time that we've ever had. At the same time, it's time for us to embrace, shake hands with this fact, and be constructive with him over the next four years.
"So even those who most strongly may disagree with his principles or things he's said and done – which is another thing, we'll see what he does compared to what he had said – no matter how much you even disagree along the way, it's time to think about how constructive can you be. Because he's our president for the next four years. At least."
It's not clear whether the interview took place before or after President Trump issued the controversial immigration ban. Matthew's wife Camilla Alves was born in Brazil, but decided to stay in LA after visiting the city to see her aunt at the age of 15. She went on to find success as a model, and officially became an US citizen in 2015.
"For me, America is great because of all the people who came her. Not in spite of them #NoBan," Ellen tweeted, while JLo stated: "Honestly I feel like we are in a nightmare right now!! In a country founded by immigrants, how did immigrant become a bad word!!! #nobannowall #unitedwestand #nomuslimban #sayingnothingissayingsomething #standup."
Michael Moore also took to Twitter. "To our Muslim neighbours in the world: I & tens of millions of others are so very sorry. The majority of Americans did not vote for this man."
