George Clooney and Reese Witherspoon have joined the star-studded lineup for the upcoming Hurricane Harvey telethon. Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Harvey, which airs on Sept. 12, will also feature appearances by Houston-native Beyoncé, Oprah Winfrey and Julia Roberts. The powerful storm has completely devastated the state of Texas, leaving massive flooding in its wake. So far, 60 people have died and thousands more have been left stranded in their homes.
A press release regarding the telethon stated, “Hand in Hand will bring the country together to raise funds, spirits and help rebuild Texas in the wake of this unprecedented devastation. Proceeds from the telethon will benefit United Way of Greater Houston, Habitat for Humanity, Save the Children, Direct Relief, Feeding Texas and The Mayor’s Fund for Hurricane Harvey Relief (administered by the Greater Houston Community Fund) through the Hand in Hand Hurricane Relief Fund managed by Comic Relief USA.”
The show will be broadcast across all major US networks and streamed on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.
Celebrities like Drake and Beyoncé have also been using their social media platforms to further raise money for the cause. On Aug 28, Beyoncé posted a photo on Instagram that reads, “Texas you are in my prayers.” The 35-year-old singer also announced she’ll be working with her own philanthropic organization BeyGood to help with aid relief.
Toronto’s own Drake is working with local relief groups and urged his fans to do the same, while NFL star J.J. Watt has made headlines for his incredible fundraising efforts. With some help from stars like Ellen DeGeneres, the Houston Texans defensive end has raised more than $19 million after surpassing his goal of $200,000.
