Well-known Canadian actor, director and funnyman Mike Myers will serve as ambassador for Prince Harry’s Invictus Games in Toronto later this month. The Austin Powers actor joins other celebrities on the roster, like Kelly Clarkson and Bruce Springsteen.
“I am thrilled to be able to participate in an active role at the Invictus Games, taking place in the city where I grew up,” said the 54-year-old in a statement. Mike’s participation in the event hits close to home, as both his parents served in the military. His mother served in the Royal Air Force while his father was a soldier in the British Army.
“The military background of my parents, who both served in Britain, makes this a cause that is near and dear to my heart. I am so honoured to be part of a Games where the focus is on supporting active service members and veterans who have given so much to their countries,” added the star.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE INVICTUS GAMES
The Invictus Games are a Paralympic style sporting event for wounded service men and women. Prince Harry was inspired to create the tournament after attending the Warrior Games in the US back in 2013. While there, the royal watched wounded soldiers show off their strength while playing a series of sports. Being that the UK didn't have a similar program, Harry decided to spearhead an international version of the games. The inaugural Invictus Games took place in London in the fall of 2014.
The festivities kick off on Sept 23 with a star-studded concert at the Air Canada Centre. Bruce Springsteen Kelly Clarkson, Bryan Adams, Bachman & Turner and French-Canadian singer Coeur de pirate will bring the Games to a close on Sept 30.
It remains to be seen if Prince Harry’s Toronto-based girlfriend Meghan Markle will be in attendance. The 36-year-old star recently opened up about their relationship, revealing that they are "very happy and in love" in an interview with Vanity Fair.
