The Weeknd has been a constant source of support for Selena Gomezas she recovers from a kidney transplant. The Toronto singer even rearranged his hectic tour schedule to be by his girlfriend's side following the challenging surgery.
Selena revealed on Thursday (Sept 14) that she underwent a kidney transplant earlier this year. Her best friend, actress Francia Raisa, stepped up to the plate and donated an organ to the pop star.
The Weeknd and Selena have been going strong since January, when they were first spotted sneaking kisses after a romantic dinner date in Santa Monica. Less than a month after they became official, the two went on an Italian getaway together, followed up by a visit to Toronto where Selena was introduced to her boyfriend’s family.
The 25-year-old's health scare explains why the star took a break from her career and social media this summer. She opened up about the experience in a touching letter on Instagram: “I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health,” she wrote, adding, “There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.”
Selena has been relatively quiet about her battle with Lupus, putting on a strong face for her fan base. But she has now promised to share her story, writing, “I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you."
