Viola Davis is as powerful and inspiring off-screen and she is on. The actress has revealed the important advice she gives her six-year-old daughter Genesis Tennon, and it’s a message we can all learn from. Viola wants her daughter to stay true to herself, especially when it comes to dressing up like some of her favourite Disney princesses and superheroes.
Speaking to Yahoo Style, the Oscar winner said she always tells her daughter, “You got to wear your hair exactly the way it is. You can be Wonder Woman, but you got to be Wonder Woman with your hair. You can be Elsa, but you got to be Elsa with your hair.”
The message is very clear. The Julliard graduate wants her daughter to love who she is without changing her appearance to look like someone else. “You can do all that stuff if you start with the palette of loving who you are,” added the mother of one.
The Oscar winner is well-known for supporting women’s rights and taking a stand against prejudiced industry standards. After making history as the first African-American woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama for her role on How to Get Away with Murder , Viola gave an equally historic acceptance speech.
“You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there,” declared the star, before thanking “[The] people who have redefined what it means to be sexy, to be beautiful, to be a woman, to be black. The Taraji P. Hensons, the Kerry Washingtons, the Halle Berrys, the Nicole Beharies, the Meagan Goods, to Gabrielle Union: thank you for taking us over that line.” Perhaps one day, Genesis will be up on stage, thanking the Viola Davis’ of the world.
