For Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling, making sure their children know their roots is so important. In a rare interview, the actress opened up about raising her family - Esmeralda, 3, and one-year-old Amada - with the love of her life and the value of culture.
The Miami native recently told People Chica, “Esmeralda mostly speaks Spanglish right now. It’s really cute. She’s definitely bilingual, and it’s really important for us to make sure that she’s not only familiar with the language, but also with the culture.”
Lucky for her and Ryan’s little ones, their grandmother lives nearby their family home in Los Angeles. And she’s a great cook, Eva revealed, “My mom, who lives 15 minutes away, makes it easy because she speaks to the girls in Spanish and cooks them Cuban food.” She continued: “We’re always listening to Cuban music. It really is a big part of our way of life. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
The clothing designer’s father, who isn’t bilingual, often gets his special time in with his granddaughters, too. “My dad, who has been here for 45 years and still doesn’t speak English, is a real asset. It’s so cool because now that I’m trying to make sure that my girls speak Spanish, it’s like, ‘Ok, Dad, take them,’ because I know that all they’re going to speak with him is Spanish.”
While Ryan is seriously outnumbered by women in their household, it doesn’t seem to bother him at all. During his appearance on Good Morning America last May, he gushed, “It’s heaven. It’s like walking through a field of flowers every day. I live with angels.”
