For most couples, the secret to a strong marriage is having time apart. But for Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, the real secret could be working together. The duo joined forces for the first time on their latest film, A Quiet Place, which premiered on April 2 in New York City, and John has some sweet insight into how they made it work.
The Hollywood couple took to the red carpet, opening up to HELLO! about the experience of working together, admitting that the project was “immensely personal.” He explained, “It certainly hit home for us, we had just had our second daughter [Violet] three weeks before I read the first script, so it’s been an immensely personal movie." Emily echoed her husband's sentiments, telling HELLO!, "I think we have a lot to draw from personally and being parents together and what we both feel about our own children."
Working together, John explained to Vanity Fair, came pretty easily. “The biggest benefit is the support system. I was emotional every day, and she would stay for the scene she wasn’t in,” John told the glossy. “It was terrifying. You don’t know what will happen, and if your two processes are going to work together. Some people were like, ‘You’re going to be divorced by the end of it.’ But we quickly learned we work really well together.”
The alum of The Office wore many hats for the creation of this film. Not only did he star in it alongside his wife, 35, but he also directed and co-wrote the horror flick. While introducing his co-stars, including Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe, during the American premiere, it’s no surprise the proud director got a little emotional.
“This is actually happening! Perfect, I just blacked out. I have no idea what I’m about to say,” he joked to the crowd, showing off the sense of humour that initially shot him to stardom. “I can’t tell you how much this movie means to me. I love that people are saying it’s scary. But to me, it is all about family and the metaphor for what it takes to be a parent, and the extremes that you would go through to protect your kids.” And he should know! Emily and John, 38, share two adorable children together: Hazel, 4, and Violet, who turns two in June.
While addressing the audience, which included the couple’s BFFs Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, he recognized how silly his sentiment sounded against the backdrop of a thriller film. “You laugh now, but afterwards you’re going to be, ‘I get it man!’ So I’m just preparing you.”
The film is officially out in theatres on Friday, April 6.
