Georgina Chapman breaks silence about ex Harvey Weinstein: ‘It’s still so very very raw’

Georgina Chapman has finally broken her silence regarding her estranged husband, former film producer Harvey Weinstein. The Marchesa designer has been quiet about the dozens of counts of alleged sexual abuse and misconduct that have piled up against the Hollywood heavyweight, but she’s finally ready to speak. “I was so humiliated and so broken,” she revealed in a new interview with Vogue.

In the piece, the 42-year-old actress revealed what she’s been going through since the news first broke back in October. As more than 60 women came forward to share stories of inappropriate and damaging experiences with Harvey, Georgina said she "couldn't keep food down" but wanted to make an informed decision. "There was a part of me that was terribly naive - clearly, so naive," she explained of her experience. "I have moments of rage, I have moments of confusion, I have moments of disbelief."

Georgina said it didn’t feel right being out in public. “I thought, who am I to be parading around with all of this going on? It’s still so very, very raw,” she shared. “I was walking up the stairs the other day and I stopped; it was like all the air had been punched out of my lungs.” But she's put her children first through it all, and its been a harrowing experience for the mom of India, 7, and five-year-old Dashiell. "I have moments when I just cry for my children. What are their lives going to be? What are people going to say to them? It's like, they love their dad. They love him. I just can't bear it for them." The celebrity-favourite designer has decided to build a farm in upstate New York to shelter them from the storm. “As soon as this happened, I had this crazy vision: I know what I need to do. I need to move to a farm upstate.”

Despite the volume of accusations against her former husband, Georgina says that she never knew what was happening, her marriage was happy and she was “absolutely not” suspicious of him. However, with more and more stories coming to light she finally revealed that she was leaving Harvey last October. In a statement to People, she said that her "heart breaks for all the women who have suffered tremendous pain because of these unforgivable actions". She added: "I have chosen to leave my husband, caring for my young children is my first priority and I ask the media for privacy at this time."

The pair is said to have finalized their divorce in January and the mother of two is starting to move forward. While her label Marchesa has had less visibility on red carpets this year, actress Scarlett Johansson donned one of Georgina’s stunning custom designs at the Met Gala: a maroon gradient gown adorned with flowers. The Avengers actress came under fire for it, with many fans saying she shouldn’t have supported Harvey’s ex-wife. But the 33-year-old simply wanted to show her support for the brand, especially during such a hard time. “I wore Marchesa because their clothes make women feel confident and beautiful and it is my pleasure to support a band created by two incredibly talented and important female designers,” she said in a statement.

And Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue, had something to say about it, too. The host of the annual event appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Thursday (May 10), where she applauded both the women. “Georgina is a brilliant designer, and I don’t think that she should be blamed for her husband’s behaviour,” she said. “I think it was a great gesture of support on Scarlett’s part to wear a dress like that on such a public occasion.”
