We can’t blame Emilia Clarke for getting flustered around charming Prince William! During an interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the Game of Thrones star opened up about the slightly embarrassing moment when she first went to the Palace, where she met the royal father of three and somehow threw all royal protocol out the window.
Talk show host Seth Meyers asked how it went, and the star responded while pulling a nervous face, “It was good.” She continued: “So, it is a frightening thing going to the palace … When you’re there, I was just relaxing and they [said], ‘Prince William is coming,’ so I was like, ‘Oh cool, great.’ I’m really relaxed and everything is going to be fine.’”
As royal fanatics know, there are quite a few guidelines to follow when meeting members of the Royal Family. Opening up about this protocol, the 31-year-old said: “They were like, ‘You can’t turn your back,’ so I was like, ‘No worries,’ and they said: ‘You have to address him as your Royal Highness.’ Then after that you can call him Prince William and there’s lots of formalities that you need to kind of adhere to.”
But clearly, nerves got the best of Emilia, who froze a bit when Duchess Kate’s husband approached her. “For whatever reason, maybe because I was so scared, I couldn’t manage to get out ‘Your Royal Highness’ … So, it was kind of like ‘ra… ra…,’ it was pretty much all I managed,” she shared with a laugh, after acting out the awkward handshake had between her and the prince.
It’s not a shocking reaction for someone who’s a self-professed royal fan! Earlier this year, while appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon , she revealed that she missed a personal screening of her film Solo: A Star Wars Story to watch the Duke and Duchess of Sussex say “I do” back in May. “I had a screening of the Star Wars movie that I’m in for my friends and family on the day,” she told Jimmy Fallon. “I didn’t get my dates right, so I didn’t realize – I sort of thought no one would turn up – but then they did, so then they watched the movie and I watched the wedding.” If that’s not royal dedication, we don’t know what is!
