A hilarious Ryan Gosling cutout campaign got the actor into this Toronto coffee shop

Who doesn’t want some Ryan Gosling with their morning cup of coffee? One local coffee shop made the most of all the stars descending on Toronto during the city’s international film festival, TIFF, by luring in the Canadian dreamboat with … the Canadian dreamboat! Grinder Coffee used a hilarious viral Twitter campaign featuring a cardboard cutout of Ryan to get the Oscar nominee in for a visit, and it actually worked.

While the father of two was in town to premiere his highly anticipated film First Man, he made sure to show off his Canadian kindness. Ryan stopped by on Tuesday (Sept. 11) and snapped a photo with one of the employees, wrapping his arm around her shoulders for a hug. The coffee shop took to Twitter to share the moment, writing: “And this happened… #ryanneedsgrinder worked. The man himself showed up. What a good spot, a well brought up Canadian boy. We truly appreciate Ryan taking the time to visit us during #tiff. Take that @idriselba your loss.”

The visit was the product of some serious social strategy – and hilarity! In the week prior to the festival’s start, Grinder Coffee on Gerrard kicked off the “#ryanneedsgrinder”campaign. The social savvy spot showed the 37-year-old’s cutout (holding a Grinder-branded espresso cup, of course) posing with customers, including Mayor John Tory, and making a case for the real Ryan’s visit.

It all culminated on the Tuesday morning, when Grinder took to Twitter to share map instructions on how to get to their shop from the TIFF Bell Lightbox. Posting a snap of the directions, they wrote: “Day 9 of our #ryanneedsgrinder campaign. Perhaps you are lost? Do you need us to call you an #uber? You can pay us back when you get here. It only takes 18min to get here so no excuses now.”

The day before that, the lucky employee who ended up meeting the man himself took a cardboard cut-out for drinks to celebrate the festival. Not exactly the same as the real deal, but it was all in the name of getting him there. “Day 8 of our #ryanneedsgrinder campaign. We took Grinder Ryan out for drinks to celebrate #TIFF2018. Listen #ryangosling this is getting weird. We need the Real Ryan to show up so we can show him our Grinder hospitality.” While Idris Elba couldn’t pull through for the shop last year during Toronto’s most star-studded week, Ryan’s Canuck heart was clearly big enough to make their dream come true.
