New mom Diane Kruger once thought she was 'too selfish' to have children

Diane Kruger has revealed why she put off starting a family for so long! The German actress gave birth to her first child, a daughter with boyfriend Norman Reedus, this past October – but Diane has now opened up about why she didn’t rush into having a baby, as she believed she was "too selfish" for kids.

“I didn’t think I wanted children for a long time,” she told Net-A-Porter’s weekly digital magazine, PorterEdit. “I was too selfish. But by the time I got to about 35, I thought, yes, I probably do want one.”

When Diane decided that she was finally ready to start a family, the Troy star simply needed to find the right partner. Thankfully, it didn’t take too long – the 42-year-old started dating her Sky co-star in 2016, after splitting from her boyfriend of ten years, Joshua Jackson. “I think as you grow older, you learn that things come to you when you’re ready for them. […] I’m glad I waited,” she said.

Walking Dead star Norman has a 19-year-old son, Mingus, with his ex-partner, supermodel Helena Christensen. First-time mom Diane revealed that there are a lot of perks to having a child with someone who is already a parent. “[Norman] is so calm, and he teaches me a lot, because he’s done it before. There’s definitely something to be said for being with someone who is doing it for the second time,” she said.

Diane also opened-up about her thoughts on marriage, and why she would"never say never" to walking down the aisle. “I would have a party. I’d like to wear a nice dress. But I’m not religious, so that aspect of marriage doesn’t mean anything to me,” Diane added. “There’s obviously a financial security that comes with marriage, but I’m financially independent – I don’t need anyone for that.”

Having experienced a lot of tabloid speculation about her personal life in the past, Diane is very protective of her privacy. she and Norman recently made a plea on Instagram for their daughter not to be photographed by paparazzi and have decided not to share her name. The dark side of fame is something her latest movie, Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy, sheds light on. “Celebrity culture is so ugly – or it can be, anyway – and that story really highlights that,” Diane said of the movie, which first premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival.
