Dax Shepard wasn’t sure he wanted to be with Kristen Bell

Though Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell are one of Hollywood’s sweetest couples, their future wasn’t always set in stone. The podcast host recently opened up about their relationship while appearing on Off Camera with Sam Jones, admitting he wasn’t sure they’d work out at the very beginning largely because his self-confidence made him question whether he wanted to be with her.

He shared with TV show host Sam: “I never ever was like, ‘Oh, I hope I can keep Kristen.’ I was going, ‘Do I want to be with a Christian, who has eight people living in her house for free, who has to get out of a car when there’s a dog who doesn’t have a leash and ruin her whole day to rescue this dog?’”

Of course, it’s likely that her gigantic heart has made for a beautiful marriage, but he admitted at first that he was afraid he wouldn’t be able to keep her. “I just slowly over time watched what fruit she bore over the way she moved through life. I looked at the results of how she lives, and they’re pretty undeniable… It’s just a better life and I wanted that, so I chose to move more in her direction,” he gushed. “She didn’t ask me to. I wanted what she had, and I replicated it.”

The father of two adorable kids Lincoln, 5, and four-year-old Delta – who he shares with his wife of six years, Kristen – has battled self-esteem issues for a long time. “I have this very weird mix of nothing thinking I’m good looking, general low self-esteem, chip on my shoulder that I’m dumb because I was dyslexic, all these things, yet unbridled arrogance in relationships,” he revealed. “I’ve always been that way.”

Dax, who hosts his own podcast called Armchair Expert, also had some wisdom to bestow on his fans listening to the interview. “She’s the first person I dated where I made a real conscious decision that I wasn’t going to try to make her into the person I wanted to date,” the 44-year-old shared. “I know what happens when I try to make them the person I want to date. I don’t end up liking that person. So I didn’t do that, and low and behold, she has come the same exact distance towards me that I’ve come toward her.” So there you have it – the secret to a happy relationship is meeting your other half halfway!
