Idris Elba thought Prince Harry was joking when he asked him to DJ at the royal wedding

Idris Elbais a talented musician in his own right – having opened for the likes of Madonna and performed at Coachella – but he can also count himself a DJ to the royals! On the Wednesday (Feb. 27) episode of The Ellen Degeneres Show, the Turn Up Charlie actor joked about his turn as a regal DJ, having spun tunes at Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding in 2018.

Though he loved the experience, he says he was floored when the royal couple asked him to take on music-mixing duties. “Harry came to a couple of parties that I DJed and he was like, ‘What are you doing on [May 19]’ and I told him nothing and then he goes, ‘Hmm, would you DJ at my wedding?’… I was like, ‘is this a joke?'” he laughed. It must've been pretty fun for his fiancé, Canadian Sabrina Dhowre, too, who was his date at the wedding.

The 46-year-old got to know future dad Prince Harry through their philanthropy work, specifically at Prince Charles’ Trust. Idris became the Anti-Crime Ambassador of the organization 2009. “So Harry and I have hung out a couple of times through his dad’s [Prince Charles] charity – The Prince’s Trust – who helped me out as a young actor so I work with them a lot,” he went on to tell Ellen Degeneres, referring to the grant he received in the early ‘90s to pursue acting.

Today, Idris is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood; he was even named People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2018, something he also addressed on the show: “You know, Dwayne Johnson [who was awarded the title in 2016], we made a movie together, and Dwayne didn’t want to give [the title] up. I was like, ‘Give me a celebratory video,’ and he was like, ‘I’m not doing that.'” When Ellen asked whether he’d have a similar issue with giving up the title, Idris replied with his trademark cheekiness: “It’s called the Sexiest Man Alive, so as long as I’m alive, I’m still sexy.”

Speaking to People after initially winning the title, he joked about people thinking he was sexy. “I was like, ‘Come on, no way. Really?' I looked in the mirror, I checked myself out. I was like, ‘Yeah, you are kind of sexy today.’ But to be honest, it was just a nice feeling. It was a nice surprise — an ego boost for sure.”

He also spoke about his life philosophy. “Life isn’t about thinking about what you should have done… I think everyone should adopt the philosophy that tomorrow is not promised so just go for it today, man. You might as well do it to your heart’s content.”
