Jessica Mulroney opens up about Duchess Meghan's royal wedding and media scrutiny

By Sarah Walker

On top of being a celebrated Canadian stylist, and the chicest and sweetest of moms – to 8-year-old twins John and Brian, and Ivy, 5 – Jessica Mulroneyis a self-proclaimed "open book." But when it comes to a few things – like her best friend Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex – her lips are completely sealed.

“This is my first interview that I’ve done since the wedding or anything,” Jessica told Harpers BAZAARin an exclusive interview, before noting she'll always stay "mum" on her best friend's royal life. “Listen, every person has to have a bit of privacy in their life. There are certain things I hold very dear and secret... There are things I'll never talk about for sure. My life is an open book, but there's always a few secret pages in the back that nobody will be able to read.”

As someone who lives in the limelight, too, Jessica knows that media scrutiny can be tough to deal with. Speaking about gossip columns and the tabloids, she said: “It’s not journalism. There’s no truth to it. [If] they decide they want to ruin somebody, they just will... It comes with the territory. There are so many benefits to certain things, but then also a lot of negativity that you have to deal with at the same time... You have to stay positive.”

It's no surprise that when Meghan moved to Toronto to film Suits, her and Jessica became fast friends – they both clearly value the strong women in their lives. “To be a good mom you have to step away from it for a minute," she told the glossy. "Whether that's getting out of the mom outfit or hanging out with your girlfriends – and not just your mom group friends – hanging out with other women." And another way she supports some of her favourite people? She uses her platform to bring awareness to Canadian designers (also an obvious passion for her royal pal, who often wears Canadian designers.) “I have a lot of friends in the entertainment business and I myself have a significant Instagram account, so I can throw them a bone and wear the earrings if I like them," she said.

So what's the biggest misconception about this fashion guru/ CityLine expert/Good Morning America columnist? That given her job she has a life! "My life is work and family,” she says recounting a recent moment when she and her husband Ben Mulroney met in the airport as she flew into Toronto and he flew out to Los Angeles to cover the Oscars. (She shared the tale on Instagram, too.) “When we're together, we wanna be super present with the kids and each other and spend all the time that we can together... My social life has really taken a little beating, but my girlfriends all understand. I'm just too tired. I just wanna be home with the kids.”
