Not only did Alex Rodriguez pull off the perfect, surprise proposal, he also went ring shopping himself! The former Major League Baseball player popped the questionto Jennifer Lopez onMarch 9 while the pair were on a romantic vacation in the Bahamas.
“He did everything on his own with the ring. It was a complete surprise [to Jen],” a source told PEOPLE. “Jennifer is ecstatic and so are their families and friends,” another insider told the publication . “Very few people knew Alex planned on proposing. It was very much a surprise for Jennifer… It was just how Alex wanted it.”
The surprise was written all over her face. On March 12, the couple took to their own Instagram accounts to finally share the magical moment with their fans. J. Lo shared a series of photos leading up to a loving kiss on the beach, while A-Rod shared one, simply captioning it: "Locking it down. #futuremrsrodriguez."
But before the world got a glimpse inside the moment, the pair shared the happy news along with the first image of Jennifer's gorgeous emerald-cut diamond ring A-Rod proposed. “She said yes,” he wrote using a heart emoji. His multi-hyphenate fiancée shared the same snap with fans.
News of the engagement sent fans of “JRod” into a bit of a frenzy, including television host Ellen DeGeneres. On the March 12 episode of Ellen's show, the comedian joked she was the one who gave Alex “the push that he needed” to pop the question. "When she announced it, she posted that picture and she actually tagged me in that photo,” Ellen remarked. “So I wrote back, ‘Yes, I’ll be your Maid of Honor.’"
The television host continued: “I don’t want to take credit for this, but yeah, I kinda... I did that... I’m pretty sure I’m the reason.” She then joked the engagement ring is “so heavy, [Alex] has to hold [Jen’s] hand up.., “It looks like it, it’s gigantic. She’s got to be really, really careful when she’s washing dishes with that!”
Laughs aside, Ellen ended her monologue with a heartfelt message for the happy couple. “J. Lo I’m very very happy for you, not just because you took my advice, but because you seem really happy together. If two extremely filthy rich people can find love, there’s hope for all of us.”
