Alanis Morissette is expecting! The 44-year-old made the surprise announcement on Instagram on Monday (March 25) with a photo of her growing baby bump. Sporting a pixie cut and a black turtleneck while singing into a microphone, the “Ironic” hitmaker captioned the shot “so much NEWness,” which led many fans to speculate the Canadian icon would soon be releasing new music, too.
Alanis and her husband, rapper Mario “Souleye” Treadway, are already parents to eight-year-old Ever Imre and almost three-year-old Onyx Solace, and have been vocal about the ups and downs of parenting. The singer has bravely opened up about her battles with postpartum depression. In 2017, she told People that while she loves her children, she has had good days and bad days since becoming a mom.
“There are days I’m debilitated to the point where I can barely move,” the Grammy winner described, adding, “It’s very isolating.” She said the illness took hold of her seconds after her daughter was born and lasted for months. “I’m used to being the Rock of Gibraltar,” she explained, “providing, protecting and maneuvering. It had me question everything. I’ve known myself to be a really incredible decision-maker and a leader that people can rely on. [Now] I can barely decide what to eat for dinner.”
Alanis said the reason she spoke out about her experience was to let other women know that struggling post-delivery is normal. “The stigma remained in a really big way,” she revealed. “There’s this version of eye contact that I have with women who have been through postpartum depression where it’s this silent, ‘Oh my God, I love you. I’m so sorry.’”
A musical based on Alanis’s famous album Jagged Little Pill, which has sold more than 33 million copies around the world, will debut on Broadway this fall.
