Giacomo Gianniotti’s real-life fairy-tale romance is fit for the big screen! He’s gearing up to exchange vows with his fiancée, Nichole Gustafson, this year. But on screen, he’s used to playing characters in the middle of rocky relationships, and the ups and downs of romance are nothing new to him. Giacomo’s new film Acquainted hits theatres April 5, and he’s also well known for playing the hunky Dr. Andrew DeLuca opposite Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey on Grey’s Anatomy.

Giacomo recently sat down with HELLO! Canada to speak about the roles and what he’s learned in relationships. “[Acquainted] is a beautiful love story that explores not just the heights and the happiness of love, but also the really nasty, difficult, trying parts of love,” he explained, opening up about a past relationship before meeting Nichole, the love of his life. “I’d been in a relationship for a long time that was dried up, if you will, but you don’t know that from the inside because you’re not able to be objective.”

But Giacomo is really living la vida dolce, and wedding plans – as if the couple couldn’t get any more romantic! – will find the pair saying “I do” in Italy, where the 29-year-old actor was born. “We’re very excited,” he gushed. “[Wedding planning has] been pretty painless. We’re very collaborative and I think we see everything eye to eye.” Nichole first caught Giacomo’s eye while he was shooting the cover for an Italian magazine. “It was a completely Italian crew and she was the only person who wasn’t Italian,” he shared. “We met on set that day and never looked back.”

Other than his wife-to-be, it’s clear the former Murdoch Mysteries actor is surrounded by amazing women – and that’s one reason he loves working on Grey’s Anatomy so much. “It’s been so empowering to be part of a workspace that’s so female. The energy since the beginning, and especially what it’s grown into now has been so incredible,” the star gushed. “ Grey’s Anatomy continues to tackle issues, continues to use their platform to shine the light on real things that are happening in the world.”

So has he gotten any love from the loyal fandom of Meredith and the late McDreamy (a.k.a. Derek Shepherd, played by Patrick Dempsey until his departure from the show in 2015)? “It’s a mix,” he said with a smile. “There’s a little bit of hate; it’s the good with the bad. But generally, it’s been very supportive and I’m happy.”
