Ryan Reynolds has been the face of many superheroes, from Deadpool to Green Lantern and now, Pikachu in the latest Pokémon instalment, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (in theatres May 10). But more than being an on-screen superstar, the actor is an everyday hero to daughters James, 4, and Inez, 2.
While chatting with Extra about his upcoming animated role as the loveable yellow Pokémon character, he gushed over his children, whose mom is Blake Lively. “When they decide to go away to college, I’m going to be that guy, ‘That’s so funny, I'm going to NYU, too!’ I’m going to be so needy,” he joked. “I love being around them. It’s the best thing in the world.”
It’s certainly not every child who gets to count their dad as an on-screen Pikachu. The funny thing is, James and Inez still don’t know they’re living with him! “My daughter James said I sound like him. She said, ‘You sound like Detective Pikachu!’ and I didn’t really acknowledge it. [I] was just like, ‘Really? Tell me more about that,’” he said. ”I want to leave it as a surprise to them. We will all go see it opening day and then I will let them know it’s me.” What a fun surprise!
There’s no question there’s a lot of laughter in the Lively-Reynolds household. Both Blake and Ryan have quite the ongoing banter on their social media. Since Blake got her big break on Gossip Girl in 2007, she’s become half of one of Hollywood's favourite couples – and she always has her off-screen comedy chops on display in exchanges with her hubby of six years. “We do it in real life all the time,” she told HELLO! of their back-and-forth.
“It was just an organic thing, and I don’t know where or when it happened, but all day long, we are just [teasing] each other because that’s my best friend!” she gushed of her beau. “I always win, of course,” she added, before joking, “And I am not competitive at all.” But really, she revealed she still gets nerves sometimes around Ryan, the way sweethearts do. “I just want him to think I’m awesome and not ever find out that I’m not!”
