Olivia Newton-John took to Twitter on May 23 to reveal the sad loss of her brother, Hugh Newton-John. She shared some grief-stricken sentiments nearly two weeks after her sibling’s death, along with a collage of photos of him.
“My dear, sweet, gentle, clever, brother Hugh passed away May 7, 2019, in Melbourne, Australia after many years of decline,” she wrote. “I love him so and will miss him terribly. Love & light, Olivia.”

Hugh’s cause of death has yet to be revealed, but Olivia shared her family member had been in poor health over the past few years. The Grease star has fought cancer twice herself, and opened a foundation called Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre. Their sister, actress and model Rona Newton-John, passed away from cancer in 2013.

Her supportive fanbase quickly jumped to console her. “I am so very sorry Olivia,” one person wrote. “Much love to you and your family. Thank you for sharing this lovely tribute with all of us,” another tweeted.
While promoting her recently released memoir, Don't Stop Believin', she sat down with HELLO! Canada to talk about her career, her relationship with her daughter and why now is the right time to tell her story. Despite the trials she's faced, Olivia says positivity plays a big role in her life.
“Staying positive and seeing good things ahead of you is really important to me and for anyone who's going through cancer or any difficult illness,” she said.
