Priyanka Chopra defends Duchess Meghan against negative press attention and trolls

Priyanka Chopra is the latest of Duchess Meghan’s friends to voice their support of her after the negative press attention and online trolling the new mom has received since she began dating Prince Harry.

The Isn’t It Romantic and Quantico star was in the UK last week with husband Nick Jonas, and said was asked about the flak Meghan has received in an interview with The Sunday Times.

“I’ve seen that and it’s really unfortunate,” Priyanka told the newspaper. “But if there’s anyone who can handle it, it’s her. Of course, it has to do with racism, it’s an obvious reason.”

In November 2016, Harry released a statement which called out the “wave of abuse and harassment” Meghan had received since the two began dating.

“Some of this has been very public – the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments,” the statement read. “Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her.”

Meghan also addressed this negative attention in an interview she and Harry gave after the two announced their engagement in November 2017.

“You know, it’s a shame that is the climate in this world to focus that much on that… but I think, you know, at the end of the day I’m just really proud of who I am and where I come from, and we have never put any focus on that,” she said.

Priyanka and Meghan have been friends since before the duchess confirmed she and Harry were a couple. The actress said her friend hasn’t changed a bit since she’s known her, and praised the attention the 37-year-old has continued to put on social issues since she and Harry became a couple.

“The beauty of Meg is that she’s been herself through all of this,” she told The Sunday Times. “A lot of people got to know her after everything, but I knew her before [she started dating Harry] and she’s the same chick. Now she’s got a real platform, she talks about the same things she always did.”

“We spent hours speaking about the difference that influence and dialogue can make to the world before this whole thing happened, so what you see now is authentically her,” Priyanka continued. “She’s always been the girl wanting to move the needle.”

Meghan has received support from a chorus of famous friends this year, who’ve leapt to her defence. In February, George Clooney said the trolling Meghan has received can be compared to Princess Diana, Harry’s late mother.

“They’re just chasing Meghan Markle everywhere, she’s been pursued and vilified,” he told Who magazine. “She has been pursued and vilified and chased in the same way that Diana was and it’s history repeating itself.”

In April, Oprah Winfrey said similar things after announcing her new Apple TV series with Harry. The 65-year-old told CBS This Morning her royal friend had been “portrayed unfairly.”

“I feel that if people really knew her they would know that she is not only everything we perceive of her in being graceful and dynamic in holding that position,” Oprah said. “But she just has a wonderful, warm, giving, loving heart… I think it’s very unfair.”

Daniel Martin and Jessica Alba also supported their friend in Meghan and Harry Plus One, a documentary shot by Oprah’s best friend Gayle King which aired in May. Makeup artist Daniel got visibly choked up and upset while choking about what Meghan has dealt with.

“I know her so well, and she doesn’t deserve all this negative press,” he said, wiping away tears.

Meghan and Harry continue to settle in to their new lives as parents after welcoming baby Archie Harrison on May 6. Meghan was positively glowing when they debuted the little boy to the world two days after he was born.

“It’s magic, it’s pretty amazing,” she said. “I have the two best guys in the world, so I’m really happy.”

“He’s just been the dream, so it’s been a special couple of days,” she continued.

Last week, it was reported Priyanka and Nick had visited baby Archie and taken him gifts from Tiffany’s. But Priyanka shut down those reports on Monday.

“While these are great gift ideas… this story is untrue, and I was actually in town for work,” she tweeted. “I hope whoever this ‘source’ is starts checking their facts more often.”
