Miscarriages are devastating experiences, as many celebrities have attested. Shay Mitchell is one of them.
The 32-year-old lost her first baby at 14 weeks gestation in 2018, and is now openly discussing the heartbreaking experience in her new pregnancy series Almost Ready.
“The first time that I was pregnant last year, Matte [Babel] and I hadn’t been planning. [But] it happened and we were really excited about it,” she said of learning she was expecting with her boyfriend. “I was like 14 weeks… at that point, I had no idea, the percentage of miscarriages. When it happened, I was just completely blindsided by it.”
The former Pretty Little Liars star admitted she still has photos of the baby from ultrasounds and doctors visits in the emotional YouTube clip, but said can’t bring herself to look at them.
She’s currently expecting a daughter with the 38-year-old Canadian journalist.
“Of course I’m super happy, but I still feel for the one that I lost,” she noted. “It’s just really tough because you feel broken, as a woman, and that’s not a great feeling.”
The support of her fans is one of the things the You star said has helped get her through the highs and lows of suffering a miscarriage.
“The support and affection that so many of you show me lifts me up during even my darkest days, one of which happened last year after I miscarried and lost the child of my hopes and dreams,” she wrote on social media on New Year’s Day 2019.
“In the spirit of the new year, I think that we need to remember that we are all on this journey together — in good times and bad — and to remind ourselves that we seldom really know or understand the struggles and hardships that other people are going through.”
She went on to announce her pregnancy on Instagram and in a YouTube video in June.
“Does this mean I’m allowed to drive in the car pool lane at all times now?” Mitchell joked in the caption of the photo showing off her baby bump.
“There is something in the oven and it’s not my pizza!!! WOW… It’s kind of surreal processing the fact that another human is growing inside of you,” she wrote in the YouTube clip. “It’s exciting, nerve-racking, difficult and emotional all at the same time. Everyone waits for the right time to make the announcement and for me it wasn’t until I couldn’t hide it anymore and was tired of wearing over sized sweatshirts.”
