TIFF 2019: Ray Romano made a hilarious joke while leaving a party and Danny DeVito enjoyed a cucumber gin

By Jen Kirsch

Last night was a night at TIFF 2019. I popped into the premiere pre-party for The Song of Names for a hot minute (was coming from elsewhere and donning shorts and runners), and I was glad I did, since Danny DeVito followed immediately behind me.

He was taken to his table inside the always -VIP-attended RBC House. The lighting inside was on-brand blue, tunes were being spun by a resident who goes by Backup DJ. Tim Roth and Robert Lantos also popped by. The room was bustling and guests enjoyed light bites and Diageo World Class signature cocktails. One drink was named after the film and one was called The Mystery, a take on the film’s theme.

I overheard Danny ordering an “ice cold cucumber and Tanqueray,” for him and the woman he sat with all evening. I love a decisive gent who knows what he likes and how he likes it.

I went back to Four Seasons Toronto for a quick costume change, then headed out for the evening. I found myself back at RBC House, this time for the Bad Education premiere party.

I had a Cinderella moment of sorts as I caught Academy Award winner Allison Janney stepping into a car an hour after the party started. Ray Romano left just before her and – walking out of the party to an empty red carpet where there were no awaiting fans – he said, “What a crowd! How am I going to get all these photos taken? People, people, calm down!”

The party continued well into the night, but I hustled down the street to Montecito where HUGO BOSS and PR powerhouse Suzanne Cohon hosted their annual bash. This year, the afterparty was celebrating the premiere of Endings, Beginnings, and all cast members were in attendance. Jamie Dornan was there, and he and I have now spent back-to-back nights “partying” together. Shailene Woodley was strikingly taller than expected and took off her jean jacket midway through to “let loose,” as she talked to guests. Sebastian Stan was also there.

I spoke with Jamie’s agent Houston over at the star’s table, and we reconnected over my now infamous clutch story from the night prior. Jamie was seen chatting with Markus Anderson for most of the party, while most people in attendance watched on. There were many cocktails served, and people seemed to be thirsty.

A Canadian media power squad were sitting out on the patio at an intimate booth. The Social ’s Lainey Lui and Jess Allen were there. Sadly, I got Jess busted for vaping when I pulled her Juul to hit some of that mango goodness – apparently you can’t vape on patios in Toronto, so here’s your warning, dear readers!

eTalk’s Tyrone Edwards, my mentor and dear friend Shinan Govani and Kathleen Newman-Bremang were also in attendance. Dancing queen Andrea Bolley, aka “The 6ix mom,” also had a laugh with us. She was spotted out just last week dancing with Snoop Dogg and is often out with Drake when he’s back in Toronto.

Meanwhile, I was sent some tips about the happenings at Don Alfonso, where Audi Canada hosted the premiere afterparty for The Goldfinch. Jon Hamm was there, as was Luke Wilson, and the party went on into the wee hours.

Speaking of the end of evening, as Jamie and Markus were waiting for their car while the party was wrapping up, guests were trying to plot and plan how to make the night endless. I found myself in a car of my own (thanks, Lyft!) with Jay Strut, and we hit up Soho House for a nightcap until the 4am last call.

I will be back at it tonight live from inside the Joker party (Robert De Niro and Joaquin Phoenix are expected), followed immediately by the Uncut Gems party, which is hosted by The Weeknd and which star Adam Sandler is due to attend.

The party for Ford v. Ferrari is also happening tonight, and I’m told Matt Damon will be in attendance. No media have been invited. Fun fact: The first time I tried smoking was only three years ago with Matt and Michelle Williams out on the Soho House ptio, where we celebrated the TIFF premiere of their Oscar-winning film Manchester by the Sea . If someone at Disney wants a journalist to attend, I have a pack of butts with Matts name on it – DMs are open.

Speaking of which, if you have any tips – hit me up and follow along on the Hello! Canada Twitter, where I’ll be giving you up to the minute tidbits all TIFF long with the hashtag #jensTIFFbits.
