Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Billy Porter win big at history-making 2019 Emmy Awards

British star Phoebe Waller-Bridge had a huge night and Billy Porter made history at the 2019 Emmy Awards on Sept. 22 as the stars turned out to honour the year’s best in television.

Schitt’s Creek was unfortunately shut out for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. But Phoebe, who has become a massive star over the last few years, took home awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series Outstanding Comedy Series for Fleabag. In a previous, untelevised ceremony, she also picked up an Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series for Fleabag.

Jodie Comer, who stars in Killing Eve, on which Phoebe is the showrunner, won for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, while Billy Porter made history by becoming the first openly gay black man to win an Emmy Award. He won for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his work on Pose.

Game of Thrones ended its historic television run by winning for Outstanding Drama Series. Peter Dinklage was also named Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Game of Thrones, which wrapped up earlier this year, received 161 Emmy nominations in its history, winning a massive 47 since it premiered in 2011.

Beloved LGBTQ icon RuPaul picked up two awards, winning for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program for his RuPaul’s Drag Race. The show also received a trophy for Outstanding Reality Competition.
