Melania Trump unveils 2019 Christmas decorations at the White House

Before US First Lady Melania Trump and US President Donald Trump got on Air Force One to head across the pond for the NATO leaders reception at Buckingham Palace, she helped unveil White House’s annual Christmas decorations. That’s something she’s done every year since 2017.
This year’s spectacular display rivals the Royal Family in terms of the number of Christmas trees – we count more than 10 in these photos. This year, there’s also a gingerbread house model of the White House itself, and many of the decorations on the trees pay tribute to the United States’ many landmarks.

Melania designs the decorations herself ever year, and 2019’s theme is “The Spirit of America.” She helped launch them by tweeting a one-minute video of her walking through all of the rooms on the evening of Dec. 1. The Grand Foyer features at least eight Christmas trees, shining with material intended to resemble fake snow around their bases.

The East Colonnade features a red carpet, above which dangle white stars. It leads the way to another impressive tree.

Several more trees are found in the East Room amongst its portraits of American historical figures. The trees are topped with golden eagles, while a spectacular silver star hangs over the fireplace.

Here’s a closer look at some of the decorations found on the trees. This one is a tribute to landmarks on the US west coast, such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Seattle’s Space Needle and the Rocky Mountains.

Similar to the Green Room, a tree sits in the middle of the Red Room. Its fireplace is also decked out in garlands, and wreaths adorn its windows.

The Red Room also features centrepieces of unique playing card adornments.
