Friends fans have been crossing their fingers for a reunion ever since the show wrapped in 2004. In the last 15 years, there has been speculation about potential TV specials, but nothing has ever come of it.
That said, fans are over the moon about the latest reports, which indicate the full cast of Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer and Matthew Perry could be coming together for an unscripted, hour-long special on HBO Max.
Multiple news outlets have reported all six stars are in talks to appear on the unscripted special for the upcoming streaming service, which is said to be debuting in May.
Fans of the beloved sitcom will know it left Netflix in December. Its new streaming home is set to be HBO Max, where viewers will be able to watch the entire series. So, a special reunion show would be the perfect thing to complement the new streaming platform.
Rumours of a Friends reunion on HBO Max date back to November, but they have ignited again recently.
There is already speculation about how much the former Friends cast members could bank for the special. Each star famously received US$1 million per episode during the tenth and final season of the TV show.
Reports about the potential reunion show suggest Jennifer, Lisa, Courteney, Matthew, David and Matt could make anywhere between US$2.5 million to US$4 million each!
Warner Bros. Television, which is behind HBO Max, declined to comment on the rumours.
Friends fans have been hoping for a reboot of the beloved NBC comedy, given the trend toward television networks resurrecting shows in recent years.
Friends co-creator Marta Kauffman put an end to speculation of a scripted show in January, saying, "Nothing scripted. We will not do anything scripted.”
But she did give fans hope about an unscripted special.
“If it was the right thing, if it were the six of them together reflecting, talking about their experiences, and the episodes, then I’m totally behind it," she stated.
We finally did get a Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt reunion at the 2020 SAG Awards much to the delight of fans – and Jen's Friends co-star Courteney – so here's hoping a future Friends reunion is possible, too.
After all, they did say, "I'll be there for you." (Sorry not sorry.)
